aortic valve area

Also written as: AVA — Aortic Valve Area

The effective cross-sectional area of the aortic valve opening, measured to assess severity of aortic stenosis.

Full Definition

Aortic valve area (AVA) represents the effective orifice area of the aortic valve during systole and is a key parameter for quantifying the severity of aortic stenosis. Normal aortic valve area is typically 3-4 cm², with severe stenosis defined as an area less than 1 cm² or 0.6 cm²/m² when indexed to body surface area. AVA can be calculated using echocardiographic methods (continuity equation), cardiac catheterization (Gorlin formula), or directly measured during surgical inspection. Accurate assessment of valve area is crucial for determining the timing of surgical intervention and the appropriateness of various treatment modalities.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as AVA; distinguish from anatomical measurements of aortic root or annulus.

In Context

  • "Echocardiography revealed severe aortic stenosis with a calculated aortic valve area of 0.8 cm²." — echocardiogram report
  • "The indexed aortic valve area of 0.4 cm²/m² confirmed the indication for aortic valve replacement." — cardiology consultation
