The procedure involves placement of a lumbar intrathecal catheter to drain CSF, thereby reducing intraspinal pressure and improving spinal cord perfusion pressure during periods of reduced blood flow. CSF pressure is typically maintained below 10 mmHg during the procedure and may continue postoperatively. While this technique has shown benefit in reducing paraplegia rates, it carries risks including spinal hematoma, infection, and CSF leak. Proper patient selection and meticulous technique are essential.
