coarctation of the aorta

A congenital narrowing of the aorta, typically near the ductus arteriosus insertion site.

Full Definition

Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital cardiovascular malformation characterized by localized narrowing of the aortic arch, most commonly occurring distal to the left subclavian artery near the ligamentum arteriosum. This condition creates upper body hypertension and reduced lower extremity perfusion. Treatment options include surgical repair (resection with end-to-end anastomosis, patch aortoplasty, or bypass grafting) or balloon angioplasty with or without stent placement, depending on patient age, anatomy, and associated lesions.

Usage

Usage note: May be abbreviated as CoA in clinical documentation.
