proximal seal zone

Full Definition

The proximal seal zone is the anatomical segment of the aorta where the proximal portion of an endovascular graft makes contact with and seals against the native aortic wall. This zone is critical for the success of endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) procedures. Adequate seal zone length, diameter, angulation, and wall characteristics are essential to prevent Type I endoleak and ensure long-term graft stability. The zone must be free of significant thrombus, calcification, or anatomical irregularities that could compromise the seal. Minimum seal zone requirements vary by device but typically require 10-15mm of healthy aortic wall for adequate fixation.
