Stanford classification

A two-type system for classifying aortic dissections based on ascending aorta involvement.

Full Definition

The Stanford classification system divides aortic dissections into two categories: Type A involves the ascending aorta (regardless of the site of origin) and requires emergent surgical intervention, while Type B is confined to the descending aorta and may be managed medically or with endovascular techniques. This classification system is preferred over the DeBakey system in clinical practice due to its simplicity and direct correlation with treatment approach.

Usage

Usage note: Type A and Type B should be capitalized when referencing this classification system.

In Context

  • "According to the Stanford classification, this Type A dissection requires immediate surgical repair." — Cardiac surgery consultation
  • "The Stanford Type B dissection was managed with thoracic endovascular aortic repair." — Discharge summary
