Abnormal lengthening of the aorta leading to tortuous configuration, often associated with aging, hypertension, or connective tissue disorders.

Full Definition

Aortic elongation describes the abnormal lengthening of the aorta beyond normal anatomical dimensions, resulting in a tortuous, S-shaped, or redundant configuration. This condition is commonly associated with aging, chronic hypertension, connective tissue disorders, or aortic wall degenerative changes. Aortic elongation can cause displacement of normal anatomical structures, complicate surgical approaches, and may be associated with increased risk of aortic dissection or aneurysm formation. The degree of elongation is assessed through measurements of aortic arch dimensions and configuration on cross-sectional imaging.

Usage note: Distinguish from aortic dilatation, which refers to increased diameter rather than length.
