Intima-media thickness (IMT) is a high-resolution ultrasound measurement of the combined thickness of the arterial intimal and medial layers, most commonly assessed in the carotid arteries. This non-invasive measurement serves as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and is used for cardiovascular risk stratification, particularly in asymptomatic individuals. Normal IMT values vary by age, gender, and arterial location, with increased thickness correlating with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. IMT progression over time can be monitored to assess treatment efficacy and disease progression.
