Maximum intensity projection reconstruction technique that displays the brightest pixels along a viewing ray.

Full Definition

Maximum intensity projection (MIP) is a volume rendering technique commonly used in vascular imaging that projects the highest intensity voxels along predetermined viewing rays onto a two-dimensional display plane. This method is particularly effective for displaying contrast-enhanced blood vessels, as the high-intensity contrast-filled vessels are preferentially shown while lower-intensity background tissues are suppressed. MIP reconstructions are valuable for providing angiogram-like images from cross-sectional data and are routinely used in CT angiography and MR angiography interpretation. However, MIP images can obscure important pathology if high-intensity artifacts or calcifications are present, and they provide limited depth information.
