Full Definition

Post-stenotic dilatation refers to the abnormal enlargement of an artery immediately distal to a hemodynamically significant stenosis. This phenomenon occurs due to the complex hemodynamic changes created by the stenotic lesion, including increased turbulence, pressure fluctuations, and altered wall stress patterns. The jet effect from high-velocity flow through the stenosis creates regions of low pressure and recirculation that contribute to progressive vessel wall weakening and dilatation. Post-stenotic dilatation is commonly observed in conditions such as renal artery stenosis, carotid stenosis, and fibromuscular dysplasia. The degree of dilatation often correlates with the severity and duration of the upstream stenosis.

Usage note: Hyphenate 'post-stenotic' when used as a compound modifier. British spelling 'dilatation' preferred over 'dilation' in formal medical literature.
