Azoospermia

The complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate, a severe form of male factor infertility.

Full Definition

Azoospermia is defined as the complete absence of sperm in the ejaculated semen sample after centrifugation. It affects approximately 1% of all men and 10-15% of infertile men. Azoospermia is classified as either obstructive (normal sperm production but blocked transport) or non-obstructive (impaired or absent sperm production). Diagnosis requires at least two semen analyses performed several weeks apart. Treatment options include surgical sperm retrieval techniques combined with ICSI for obstructive cases, or hormonal therapy for certain non-obstructive cases.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from oligospermia (low sperm count) and aspermia (absence of ejaculate).

In Context

  • "Testicular sperm extraction was performed for non-obstructive azoospermia." — Surgical procedure note
  • "Genetic counseling was recommended due to the patient's azoospermia and family history." — Consultation recommendation
