Cumulus-Oocyte Complex

Also written as: COC — Cumulus-Oocyte Complex

The structure consisting of an oocyte surrounded by cumulus cells retrieved during follicular aspiration.

Full Definition

The cumulus-oocyte complex (COC) is the functional unit retrieved from ovarian follicles during oocyte collection procedures. It consists of the mature oocyte surrounded by specialized granulosa cells called cumulus cells, which provide metabolic support and are essential for oocyte maturation. The appearance and integrity of the cumulus-oocyte complex is used by embryologists to assess oocyte quality and predict fertilization potential. During IVF procedures, cumulus cells are typically removed before intracytoplasmic sperm injection but may be left intact for conventional insemination methods.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as COC in laboratory documentation.
