For cleavage-stage embryos, assessment focuses on cell number, symmetry, and fragmentation percentage, while blastocyst evaluation considers expansion, inner cell mass quality, and trophectoderm appearance. Standardized grading systems help ensure consistency between laboratories and practitioners. While morphology remains the gold standard for embryo selection, it has limitations and increasingly is supplemented by other technologies such as preimplantation genetic testing and time-lapse imaging.
