Hysteroscopy
A minimally invasive procedure using a thin, lighted telescope to examine the inside of the uterus and treat intrauterine abnormalities.
Full Definition
Hysteroscopy is a gynecological procedure that involves inserting a hysteroscope (a thin, flexible telescope) through the cervix to directly visualize the uterine cavity. This technique allows for both diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic intervention of intrauterine conditions that may affect fertility, such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or uterine septum. The procedure can be performed in an office setting under local anesthesia or in an operating room under general anesthesia depending on the complexity. Hysteroscopy is often recommended as part of fertility workup when imaging suggests intrauterine abnormalities that could impair implantation.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from laparoscopy, which examines pelvic organs from outside the uterus.
