Inner Cell Mass

The cluster of cells within a blastocyst that will develop into the fetus.

Full Definition

The inner cell mass (ICM) is a group of pluripotent cells located within the blastocyst cavity that gives rise to the fetus proper. During blastocyst formation, cells differentiate into either trophectoderm (future placenta) or inner cell mass (future fetus). ICM quality is assessed during embryo grading and significantly influences implantation potential and pregnancy outcomes. A well-defined, cohesive ICM indicates higher developmental competence and better prognosis for successful pregnancy.
