Oocyte maturity assessment involves the morphological evaluation of retrieved oocytes to classify their developmental stage and predict fertilization potential. Mature oocytes (metaphase II) display a first polar body and clear cytoplasm, while immature oocytes may be in metaphase I (no polar body) or germinal vesicle stage (visible nucleus). This assessment guides decisions about timing of insemination or ICSI and affects fertilization success rates. Additional morphological features evaluated include cytoplasmic granularity, vacuoles, and zona pellucida appearance. Accurate maturity assessment is crucial for optimizing fertilization outcomes.
