Ovarian Torsion

Twisting of the ovary and fallopian tube causing compromised blood flow, often occurring as a complication of ovarian stimulation.

Full Definition

Ovarian torsion is a gynecological emergency involving the complete or partial rotation of the ovary and often the fallopian tube around their vascular pedicle. In ART contexts, it can occur as a complication of controlled ovarian stimulation when enlarged ovaries become more mobile. The condition requires immediate surgical intervention to prevent ovarian necrosis. Risk factors include ovarian size greater than 5 cm, pregnancy, and prior history of torsion.

Usage

Usage note: Always requires immediate medical attention; distinguish from other causes of acute pelvic pain in ART patients.
