Full Definition

Transvaginal oocyte retrieval (TVOR) is the standard procedure for collecting oocytes in IVF cycles, performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure involves using a transvaginal ultrasound probe with an attached needle guide to puncture each follicle and aspirate the follicular fluid containing the oocyte. The entire procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on the number of follicles. Risks include bleeding, infection, and rare injury to surrounding structures. The timing of oocyte retrieval is precisely scheduled 34-36 hours after trigger injection to ensure optimal oocyte maturity. Success is measured by the number of mature oocytes retrieved relative to the number of follicles visualized during monitoring.
