A standardised clinical test that measures a patient's ability to repeat sentences presented against a background of speech-spectrum noise, expressed as a signal-to-noise ratio.

Full Definition

The Hearing in Noise Test (HINT) assesses speech intelligibility in noise by determining the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at which a listener can correctly repeat 50% of sentences. Unlike word-list tests conducted in quiet, HINT simulates real-world listening environments and is particularly useful for evaluating hearing aid benefit and cochlear implant outcomes. Results are reported as an SNR loss in decibels relative to normal-hearing norms. Editors should distinguish HINT from QuickSIN, which uses digit triplets, and should note that HINT scores are reported as SNR values rather than percentage correct.

Usage note: Expand on first use. Report HINT results as an SNR value in dB, not as a percentage correct. Do not conflate with word recognition score obtained in quiet.
