Three small bones in the middle ear (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.

Full Definition

The ossicular chain consists of three tiny bones—the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup)—that form a mechanical linkage system in the middle ear cavity. These bones transmit and amplify sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the oval window of the cochlea, providing approximately 25-30 dB of mechanical advantage through impedance matching. Disruption of the ossicular chain through trauma, infection, or congenital malformation causes conductive hearing loss with characteristic audiological patterns. Surgical reconstruction (ossiculoplasty) can often restore the mechanical integrity and improve hearing when the chain is damaged or eroded.
