Tympanic Membrane

The thin, cone-shaped membrane separating the outer ear canal from the middle ear, commonly referred to as the eardrum.

Full Definition

The tympanic membrane (TM) is the structure that vibrates in response to sound waves, transmitting acoustic energy to the ossicles of the middle ear. In audiology reports and discharge summaries, its condition is routinely described following otoscopic examination — findings may include intact, perforated, retracted, or scarred. Editors should note that 'tympanic membrane' is the preferred formal term in clinical documents, while 'eardrum' is acceptable in patient-facing materials. The abbreviation TM is widely used in clinical notes but should be expanded on first use in formal reports. It must not be confused with 'tympanogram,' which is the graphical output of a tympanometry test.

Usage note: Abbreviate as TM only after spelling out in full on first use. 'Eardrum' is appropriate in patient information leaflets but not in peer-reviewed clinical writing.
