Auditory scene analysis (ASA) refers to the cognitive and perceptual mechanisms that allow a listener to parse a complex acoustic environment into distinct, identifiable sound sources. In aural rehabilitation, deficits in ASA are a key reason why hearing aid users struggle in noisy or reverberant settings even after amplification is optimised. Editors working with rehabilitation literature must distinguish ASA as a perceptual construct from simpler notions of 'listening in noise.' The concept was formalised by psychologist Albert Bregman and has become central to both hearing science and hearing technology design. Clinicians sometimes refer to the practical difficulties arising from impaired ASA as the 'cocktail party problem.'
