Hearing Loop

An assistive listening system that transmits sound electromagnetically via a wire loop to the telecoil (T-coil) of a hearing aid or cochlear implant processor, reducing the effect of background noise and distance.

Full Definition

A hearing loop (also known as an induction loop or audio-frequency induction loop system) consists of a wire installed around the perimeter of a room or venue that carries an electrical current corresponding to the audio signal. Hearing aids and cochlear implant sound processors equipped with a telecoil (T-coil) can pick up this electromagnetic signal directly, delivering clearer sound without ambient noise interference. Hearing loops are frequently found in theatres, places of worship, banks, and healthcare settings, and their installation is mandated in certain jurisdictions under accessibility legislation. Editors should note that 'hearing loop,' 'induction loop,' and 'loop system' are used interchangeably in different national contexts; British English favours 'hearing loop' or 'induction loop,' while American usage more commonly employs 'hearing loop.'
