Listening effort refers to the mental load required to successfully decode and understand a spoken message, particularly under degraded acoustic conditions such as background noise, reverberation, or reduced audibility. Unlike speech intelligibility scores—which measure accuracy of comprehension—listening effort captures the cost of achieving that comprehension in terms of cognitive fatigue, divided attention, and working memory demand. It is increasingly recognised as a key outcome measure in aural rehabilitation research, since individuals with hearing loss may achieve adequate intelligibility scores but report significant fatigue. Listening effort is assessed through dual-task paradigms, pupillometry, reaction time measures, or self-report scales. Editors should ensure that studies clearly specify which construct and measurement method are being used, as the term encompasses a heterogeneous set of operationalisations.
