Most comfortable loudness level (MCL) is the intensity at which a listener reports sound as being optimally pleasant — neither too soft nor too loud. Clinicians use MCL to anchor hearing aid gain targets and to guide counselling about listening expectations. In rehabilitation documentation, MCL is often plotted alongside hearing threshold and UCL to illustrate the dynamic range available for amplification. Editors should ensure that MCL is not confused with the 'comfortable listening level' used in some research paradigms, which may be defined differently. The measure is expressed in dB HL or dB SPL and the reference should always be stated.
