In hearing aid acoustics, a vent is a small cylindrical aperture running through the body of a custom ear mould or in-the-ear device, connecting the ear canal to the external environment. Vents serve multiple purposes: they reduce the occlusion effect (the booming quality of the wearer's own voice), allow low-frequency sound to escape (modifying the frequency response), and enable air circulation to improve comfort. Vent diameter directly affects acoustic performance, and editors reviewing fitting documentation must ensure that vent specifications (diameter in millimetres) are accurately reported. The terms 'vent' and 'bore' are sometimes confused; the bore refers to the sound channel from hearing aid to ear canal, while the vent is the acoustic bypass channel.
