A complication that can occur when surgical reconstruction creates a segment of bowel with reduced motility or partial obstruction, leading to bacterial overgrowth and malabsorption. In bariatric surgery, this may affect the biliopancreatic limb or occur at anastomotic sites. Symptoms include diarrhea, bloating, vitamin B12 deficiency, and fat malabsorption. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and may require surgical revision in severe cases.
