Malabsorption in bariatric surgery refers to the deliberate reduction of nutrient absorption achieved by bypassing portions of the small intestine, particularly in procedures like gastric bypass and duodenal switch. While contributing to weight loss through reduced caloric absorption, malabsorption increases the risk of nutritional deficiencies including vitamins B12, D, folate, iron, and calcium. Patients require lifelong supplementation and regular monitoring of nutritional status. The degree of malabsorption varies by procedure, with duodenal switch causing the most significant malabsorption and sleeve gastrectomy causing minimal malabsorption.
