Mesenteric defect closure
Surgical repair of openings in the mesentery created during bariatric procedures to prevent internal hernias.
Full Definition
A critical step in laparoscopic bariatric surgery involving the suturing of gaps or defects in the mesentery that are created during the procedure. These defects, particularly Peterson's space and jejunojejunostomy mesenteric defects, can allow bowel loops to herniate through and cause intestinal obstruction. Closure is typically performed with non-absorbable sutures to prevent late complications.
