metabolic syndrome

A cluster of conditions including insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia that often improves after bariatric surgery.

Full Definition

Metabolic syndrome is defined as the presence of three or more of the following: central obesity (waist circumference >102 cm in men, >88 cm in women), elevated triglycerides (≥150 mg/dL), low HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dL in men, <50 mg/dL in women), hypertension (≥130/85 mmHg), and elevated fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dL). The syndrome affects up to 80% of bariatric surgery candidates and significantly increases cardiovascular disease risk. Bariatric surgery, particularly procedures with metabolic effects like gastric bypass, can lead to dramatic improvement or resolution of metabolic syndrome components, often before significant weight loss occurs.
