Assessment tool used to determine appropriate level of care for mental health treatment based on clinical variables.

Full Definition

Level of Care Utilization System (LOCUS) is a standardized assessment instrument that evaluates six clinical variables to determine the most appropriate level of mental health care. The variables include risk of harm, functional status, comorbidity, recovery environment, treatment acceptance, and engagement. LOCUS helps clinicians make objective decisions about whether a patient needs crisis intervention, inpatient care, residential treatment, or various levels of outpatient services. The tool promotes consistent decision-making and helps ensure patients receive care at the appropriate intensity level.
