PHP

Also written as: PHP — Partial Hospitalization Program

Day treatment program providing intensive mental health services while patients return home each evening.

Full Definition

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured mental health treatment program that typically operates 5-6 hours per day, 5-7 days per week. PHPs provide intensive services including psychiatric evaluation, medication management, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and psychoeducation. Patients participate during the day and return home in the evening, making it an alternative to inpatient hospitalization for those who need intensive treatment but can maintain safety in the community. PHPs often serve as step-down care from inpatient units or step-up care when outpatient treatment proves insufficient.

Usage

Usage note: PHP is standard abbreviation; distinguish from IOP by intensity and hours per week.
