SMART Recovery

Also written as: SMART — Self-Management and Recovery Training

A self-help program for addiction recovery that uses cognitive-behavioral and motivational techniques rather than spiritual or disease model approaches.

Full Definition

SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is an evidence-based addiction recovery program that emphasizes self-directed change using cognitive-behavioral techniques and motivational interviewing principles. Unlike 12-step programs, SMART Recovery does not view addiction as a disease or require belief in a higher power. The program focuses on four key areas: building motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and behaviors, and living a balanced life. Meetings are educational and use tools such as the SMART Recovery Toolbox, which includes techniques like cost-benefit analysis and DISARM (Destructive thoughts and Self-talk Awareness and Refusal Method). The approach encourages participants to 'graduate' from regular attendance when they feel ready to maintain recovery independently.

Usage

Usage note: SMART is an acronym but is typically written as 'SMART Recovery' rather than 'S.M.A.R.T. Recovery'. The full form should be provided on first use.

In Context

  • "The patient preferred SMART Recovery meetings over traditional 12-step programs due to the cognitive-behavioral approach." — Treatment planning note
