Behavioral Momentum

Tendency for established behavior patterns to persist and resist change, analogous to physical momentum.

Full Definition

Behavioral momentum describes the resistance of behavior to change, particularly when that behavior has been frequently reinforced or has become habitual. Just as physical objects in motion tend to stay in motion, well-established behaviors tend to continue even when conditions change. In behavioral medicine, understanding behavioral momentum helps clinicians predict which behaviors will be most difficult to modify and develop strategies to overcome resistance to change through building alternative behavioral momentum.
