Full Definition

Stimulus equivalence refers to a phenomenon where stimuli that are not physically similar come to function as equivalent or interchangeable through conditional discrimination training. When stimulus equivalence emerges, the stimuli demonstrate three mathematical properties: reflexivity (A=A), symmetry (if A=B, then B=A), and transitivity (if A=B and B=C, then A=C). This concept is fundamental to understanding language development, conceptual learning, and symbolic behavior. Stimulus equivalence formation suggests that individuals can derive new relationships from previously learned ones without explicit training, which has important implications for educational and therapeutic interventions.
