Stimulus generalization is a fundamental learning principle where behaviors learned in response to one stimulus begin to occur when similar stimuli are present. This process allows individuals to apply learned skills across different settings, people, or situations without requiring separate training for each variation. In behavioral interventions, promoting appropriate stimulus generalization is essential for ensuring that therapeutic gains transfer from clinical settings to real-world environments. However, overgeneralization can also be problematic when responses occur to inappropriate stimuli. Clinicians must carefully plan generalization programming to achieve optimal transfer of learning while maintaining appropriate discrimination between relevant and irrelevant stimuli.
