Full Definition

Background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) refers to the enhancement of normal fibroglandular breast tissue on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). BPE is assessed visually and categorized as minimal, mild, moderate, or marked according to the amount and intensity of enhancement in normal breast parenchyma. The degree of BPE can vary with hormonal status, menstrual cycle timing, and hormone therapy use. Higher levels of BPE may obscure or mimic breast lesions, potentially affecting the sensitivity and specificity of breast MRI interpretation. Optimal MRI timing in premenopausal women (days 7-14 of menstrual cycle) can help minimize BPE.
