The second most common type of invasive breast cancer, accounting for 10-15% of cases and often more difficult to detect on imaging.

Full Definition

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common form of invasive breast cancer after invasive ductal carcinoma. Unlike ductal carcinoma, lobular cancer grows in a single-file pattern through breast tissue, making it more difficult to detect on mammography and physical examination. ILC tends to be hormone receptor-positive and has a lower likelihood of HER2 overexpression. The growth pattern can make accurate size assessment challenging, and patients may require MRI for proper staging.

Usage note: Always specify 'invasive' to distinguish from lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS).
