sentinel lymph node biopsy

Surgical procedure to examine the first lymph node where cancer is likely to spread from the primary tumor.

Full Definition

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to determine whether breast cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. The sentinel node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from the primary tumor and is most likely to contain cancer cells if the cancer has begun to spread. A radioactive tracer and/or blue dye is injected to identify the sentinel node, which is then removed and examined under a microscope. This procedure helps stage the cancer and guide treatment decisions while avoiding the potential complications of full axillary lymph node dissection.

Usage

Usage note: SLNB is acceptable abbreviation in clinical contexts.
