Vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) is an image-guided breast biopsy technique that uses vacuum suction to draw tissue into a sampling chamber where it is cut by a rotating blade. This method allows for collection of multiple, larger tissue samples through a single probe insertion, reducing sampling error and providing more tissue for pathological analysis. VAB is particularly useful for sampling microcalcifications, MRI-detected lesions, or areas requiring extensive sampling. The technique can be performed under stereotactic, ultrasound, or MRI guidance depending on lesion visibility.
