Temporary wound covering combining biological and synthetic materials for burn treatment.
Full Definition
A specialized wound dressing that combines biological components (such as collagen) with synthetic materials to create a temporary skin substitute for burn wounds. These membranes provide immediate wound coverage, reduce fluid loss, decrease pain, and create an optimal environment for healing while permanent coverage options are prepared. Common examples include Biobrane and TransCyte. Biosynthetic membranes are particularly useful in pediatric burn care and for covering donor sites, as they can remain in place for extended periods and often incorporate into the healing tissue.
