Full Definition

Chromosomal instability (CIN) refers to an elevated rate of chromosome structure alterations or numerical chromosome changes during cell division. This genomic instability manifests as aneuploidy, chromosome rearrangements, deletions, amplifications, and translocations. CIN is observed in approximately 85% of solid tumors and contributes to cancer development by causing loss of tumor suppressor genes or activation of oncogenes. It can result from defects in chromosome segregation machinery, DNA damage checkpoints, or repair mechanisms.
