liquid biopsy

A non-invasive diagnostic technique that analyzes circulating tumor DNA or other cancer biomarkers in blood samples.

Full Definition

Liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive diagnostic approach that detects and analyzes cancer-related biomarkers circulating in the bloodstream, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), circulating tumor cells (CTCs), and exosomes. This technology enables real-time monitoring of tumor genetics without the need for repeated tissue biopsies. Liquid biopsies can detect minimal residual disease, monitor treatment response, identify mechanisms of drug resistance, and track tumor evolution over time. The approach is particularly valuable when tissue biopsies are technically challenging or when serial monitoring is required.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate when used as adjective; distinguish from traditional tissue-based biopsies.
