Pronunciation: C-I-N
Also written as: CIN — cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia; a grading system for precancerous changes in cervical cells.
Full Definition
Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a histologic classification system used to describe precancerous changes in the cells lining the cervix. The system grades abnormalities as CIN 1 (mild dysplasia), CIN 2 (moderate dysplasia), or CIN 3 (severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ). CIN 1 often resolves spontaneously and may only require surveillance, while CIN 2 and CIN 3 (collectively termed high-grade lesions) have higher malignant potential and typically require treatment. This grading system helps guide clinical management and treatment decisions for cervical abnormalities.
Usage
Usage note: Always followed by a number (1, 2, or 3). Write as 'CIN 1', 'CIN 2', or 'CIN 3' with a space before the number.
