A breast imaging technique using digital detectors instead of film to capture and store mammographic images.

Full Definition

Digital mammography, also known as full-field digital mammography (FFDM), uses digital detectors to capture breast images electronically rather than on traditional film. This technology offers several advantages over film mammography, including improved image quality, the ability to manipulate contrast and brightness for better visualization, reduced radiation exposure, and electronic storage and transmission capabilities. Digital mammography has been shown to be particularly beneficial for imaging dense breast tissue and is now the standard of care in most developed countries.

Usage note: Often abbreviated as FFDM in technical contexts. Distinguish from digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography).
