LDCT (low-dose computed tomography) is a specialized imaging technique that uses reduced radiation exposure compared to standard CT scans while maintaining adequate image quality for detecting lung nodules and early-stage lung cancer. LDCT screening has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality in high-risk populations, particularly current and former heavy smokers. The technique involves taking cross-sectional images of the chest without contrast material, allowing radiologists to identify small pulmonary nodules that may represent early lung cancer. However, LDCT screening also has a high rate of false positive findings due to the detection of benign nodules.
