PSA

Pronunciation: P-S-A

Also written as: PSA — prostate-specific antigen

Prostate-specific antigen; a protein measured in blood tests to screen for prostate cancer.

Full Definition

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels in the blood may indicate prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or prostatitis. PSA testing is used as a screening tool for prostate cancer, though it is not specific to cancer and can be elevated in non-malignant conditions. The test is typically offered to men over 50, or earlier for those at higher risk, and results are measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL).

Usage

Usage note: Always written in all capitals. When first mentioned, spell out as 'prostate-specific antigen (PSA)'.

In Context

  • "The patient's PSA level was 6.2 ng/mL, prompting referral for further evaluation." — Laboratory report
