Full Definition

BIS (Bispectral Index) monitoring is an EEG-based system that provides a numerical value (0-100) indicating the patient's level of consciousness and depth of anesthesia during surgery. The technology analyzes brainwave patterns to help anesthesiologists titrate anesthetic agents appropriately, particularly important during cardiac surgery where awareness under anesthesia poses significant risks. BIS values below 60 typically indicate adequate anesthetic depth, while values above 80 suggest possible awareness. The system helps optimize anesthetic delivery while minimizing overdosing.
