cardioplegic arrest

Deliberate cessation of cardiac electrical and mechanical activity using high-potassium solution to protect the myocardium during surgery.

Full Definition

The intentional stopping of the heart using cardioplegic solutions containing high concentrations of potassium, which prevents depolarization and maintains the myocardium in a relaxed, non-contracting state. This technique, combined with hypothermia, dramatically reduces myocardial oxygen consumption and provides optimal surgical conditions while protecting against ischemic injury. The quality of arrest is assessed by absence of electrical activity and mechanical contractions, ensuring adequate myocardial protection throughout the procedure.

Usage

Usage note: Planned procedure; distinguish from pathologic cardiac arrest.

In Context

  • "Excellent cardioplegic arrest was achieved with immediate cessation of electrical activity." — Operative note
  • "The heart showed signs of inadequate cardioplegic arrest with persistent contractions." — Quality assessment
