contractility

The intrinsic ability of the myocardium to contract independent of preload and afterload conditions.

Full Definition

The inherent strength of myocardial contraction that reflects the heart's ability to generate force and shorten its muscle fibers, independent of loading conditions. Contractility is a fundamental determinant of cardiac performance and is often assessed using parameters such as ejection fraction, dp/dt max, or the slope of the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship. In cardiac anesthesia, contractility assessment guides the use of inotropic agents and helps predict weaning success from cardiopulmonary bypass.
