gaseous microemboli

Microscopic air bubbles that can form in the bypass circuit and potentially cause neurologic complications.

Full Definition

Tiny air bubbles generated during cardiopulmonary bypass from cavitation, oxygenator function, or surgical manipulation that can travel to cerebral or coronary circulation. These emboli, typically less than 40 microns, are largely filtered by pulmonary capillaries in normal circulation but bypass this natural filter during extracorporeal circulation. Modern oxygenators and arterial line filters significantly reduce but may not eliminate these emboli, making meticulous technique essential for neuroprotection.
